Licentiate (LRPS)

FAQs

Distinctions offer individuals a real opportunity to develop as a photographer and gain insight and understanding into their own style of photography.

We offer three levels of Distinction; Licentiate, Associate & Fellowship. We recommend you apply for the Licentiate first, unless you're an experienced photographer, in which case you may decide to apply for our Associate distinction first.

For the Licentiate, applicants must show (among other criteria) a variety of approach and techniques but not necessarily in subject matter. It's demanding but achievable for most dedicated photographers and requires the submission of 10 images and a Presentation layout which reflects your ability as a photographer.

The RPS wants more individuals to commence their Distinctions journey and realise the benefits of this experience. To achieve this goal of reaching a wider audience and taking more individuals through the Distinctions journey, we’re making the application process easier for those starting out.

From spring 2024 anyone hoping to obtain a Licentiate will be able to apply online only, submitting 10 digital images and a presentation layout. For those working on a print submission two assessments will be planned for February and March 2024.

On this page you will find everything you need to apply for the Licentiate (LRPS).

Licentiate Criteria

All applications for the Licentiate distinction will be assessed against the following criteria. Please be sure to read through the LRPS Guidelines for more details about each section:

  1. Camera work and Technical Quality
  2. Visual Awareness
  3. Communication
  4. Overall Impression
